About the film
Henri, a man of the stage whose only reason for being is to perform, stages his own death so that he can pursue his passion until the very last moment. An extended metaphor of theatre runs throughout the film, reinforced by the literary tone of the dialogue and the presence of the small camera recording this final performance.
Teresa, personally affected by end-of-life issues through her parents, commits to helping him and takes significant risks. Gaël embraces his role as a responsible son, overcoming his reluctance to stand by his father. It is during these crucial final hours, at the moment when the decision is about to be carried out, that we understand the path each of them has taken to reach this point.
Carried by traditional Japanese music, the film alludes to The Ballad of Narayama by Shōhei Imamura: following custom, an elderly woman who feels she has become useless persuades her son to take her to Mount Narayama to let her die there. The rock overlooking Henri’s village symbolizes a contemporary Mount Narayama. Its ever-present silhouette serves as a reminder of the existential reality Henri faces. The rock calls to him; it is time for him to climb to the summit.
